Global Peace and Unity Weekend
Interpal was a main sponsor of this year’s Global Peace and Unity Weekend, held at the Excel Conference and Exhibition Centre on 24 and 25 November.
GPU, run in partnership with the Islam Channel, is the largest multicultural event of the year. Attended by over 50,000 people from around the world, its purpose is to provide a platform for exchange of knowledge, culture and entertainment between members of the Islamic community and other groups, and to break barriers and build bridges between the diverse cultures. The event is aimed at families and seeks to offer “a rich and challenging environment in pursuit of the goal of global peace and respect for all communities”.
Attractions at the GPU initiative included high profile international speakers and celebrity guests, and an array of live entertainment, from live performance to the grand exhibition of the two holy mosques. Other highlights included a vibrant souk area, a huge array of exhibitors from around the world, international cuisine, workshops and seminars, a “dynamic Islamic” exhibition, a kids’ zone full of activities and competitions, and a sensational firework display!
Interpal had its own exhibition area at the event which was entitled “Palestine: a nation under siege”. Using this opportunity to draw attention to the current situation in the West Bank and Gaza, Interpal’s exhibition was focused around a partition wall which represented the wall built by Israelis in the West Bank. Visitors came to the stall to write messages on the wall and discuss the problems in Palestine with Interpal representatives. By the end of the GPU weekend, Interpal had gathered the contact details of many potential supporters, raised valuable funds, and spread awareness of the plight of the Palestinian people.
