International Day of
the Girl Child

rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. For girls
living in the refugee camps in the occupied Palestinian territories, Lebanon

year-old Zeina is just one of the many girls Interpal has been able to help. Here
is her story.
was born in Beddawi refugee camp in north Lebanon. She lives with her brother
Ahmed and mother Widad. Her father lost his life in a car accident. The family’s
financial situation is difficult, as Zeina’s mother is unemployed. Life in the camp is harsh, with access to
basic services limited and many other restrictions imposed on their livelihood
brother Ahmad is studying civil engineering in Beirut Arab University. Due to
his excellent grades and the family’s social situation, he was able to get a
scholarship that covered his university fees. Zeina is also a very bright
student, she tells us that her favourite subjects are chemistry, mathematics
and English, and that she has the hope one day to become a doctor, to be able
to help and serve people. She enjoys reading and writing stories.
mother describes her daughter as being an ambitious, strong, hardworking, calm
and soft-hearted young woman: “I want my daughter to be able to fulfil all
her dreams: be successful, useful to her community and live a stable and
at Interpal, we have been supporting Zeina and her family since 2011. The
monetary sponsorship they receive helps the family live a decent life. The
money can be used to buy nutritious food, school books, clothes, etc. Zeina’s
case is a good example of how Interpal helps disadvantaged Palestinian girls
gain better chances in life. Sponsoring a child not only helps them, but helps
the whole family out of poverty and back into dignity and hope.
