Screening of “Where Should the Birds Fly?”

Yesterday evening we went to the P21 Gallery to attend a screening of “Where Should the Birds Fly?”,
a documentary directed and narrated by Fida Qishta,
a Filmmaker from Gaza.

The documentary is mostly dedicated to the 2008-2009 Israeli offensive against
Gaza. Fida Qishta says, “They called it Operation
Cast Lead, but we call it a massacre.” The assault left
1,400 Palestinians dead (including 300 children) and 5,000 injured.
Israel used a number of internationally-banned weapons such as white phosphorus, a chemical which enters the body and
burns the skin from the inside.

The most affecting character of the film is 10-year-old Mona
Samouni. During the attack, Mona was hiding in one building with nearly 100
members of her family, all civilians.  The
building was hit three times by the Israeli forces and twenty-one
members of her family were killed in front of her, including
her mother and father. The film follows her over a period of two years as she
copes with her grief and tries to make sense of what happened.
