Supporting Palestinian Elders

Interpal works to ensure that elderly Palestinians are taken care of. The importance of compassion and respect for elders is a valued Palestinian tradition and something we have built into our work in the field.

Age brings a number of health and social difficulties, and in the refugee camps of Lebanon or Gaza, this further compounds the many struggles of Palestinian refugees.

Our field offices have worked to support:

  • the El Wafa Residential Home for the Elderly in Gaza by providing medical supplies (and supporting the hospital when it was forced to relocate after being destroyed in the 2014 assault on Gaza)
  • medical supplies for the elderly and subsidising medical care for older patients across our areas of operation.
  • iftars and events for the elderly as a form of outreach and psycho-social support in Gaza and Lebanon.
  • financial support for the elderly, as well as the provision of food and water across all our areas of operation.

Through such interventions, Interpal are able to ensure that we do not allow older Palestinians to fall through the gaps, and that their needs are not sidelined due to poverty. We have supported hundreds of elderly beneficiaries in 2016, and this has been due to the generosity of our donors.

We are also very pleased to work alongside organisations such as El Wafa and the Palestine Trauma Centre, which are dedicated to caring for the vulnerable and show such inspiring compassion and resilience despite the many obstacles they face.
