Nelson Mandela Day 2017

Remembering a legend-Continuing a legacy

“We know all too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians”-Nelson Mandela

It is almost four years since the death of Nelson Mandela, yet his legacy and message of tolerance and peace continue to resonate with millions across the world.

Nelson Mandela Day, marked on 18th July each year, was established to commemorate the life and service of Nelson Mandela in South Africa and the world. It serves as a day in which many of us look back at what he has achieved and what can be done to continue his great legacy.

During his lifetime, Nelson Mandela faced adversity, injustice and even incarceration in order to obtain justice and freedom for all. He drew various parallels between apartheid South Africa and the circumstances of those living in occupied Palestine. Indeed, he noted the suffering of Palestinians and vocally advocated for their rights.

As long as we live in a world in which intolerance, inequality and injustice continue to exist, Nelson Mandela’s message remains relevant, and as we continue his legacy, we keep his spirit alive.
