Hope for Palestine

The checkpoints and land theft in the West Bank, as well as the brutal siege of Gaza has left Palestinians with a crippled economy.  Efforts to call attention to the plight of Palestinians is routinely stifled. At times, the situation feels hopeless.

Let’s change this. On this blessed month, give hope to Palestine.

Hope for Palestine - Ramadan 2023

By the blessings of God, the month of Ramadan has graced us with its presence.

In this month, we abstain from food and water during sunlight hours in the hope of God’s mercy and forgiveness. The doors of heaven are wide open, with the reward for charity, prayer, and good deeds are multiplied.

Yet for many across the world, Ramadan will be a difficult time. The recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria have impacted refugees and compounded their suffering including many Palestinians who lived there after fleeing war and expulsion. Our hearts and prayers go out to them and the efforts to alleviate their suffering. We ask you to share your donations during this blessed time with Palestinians suffering siege and occupation.

Refugee camps across Palestine are overcrowded and unsafe. Poor infrastructure and unsanitary water leave families at constant risk of infections and diseases. Vulnerable children and their families struggle with food insecurity, employment, and access to adequate healthcare. This has huge ramifications for those who need life-saving treatments and medicines.

The checkpoints and land theft in the West Bank, as well as the brutal siege of Gaza has left Palestinians with a crippled economy. Frequent attacks on the coastal enclave have also left hospitals and clinics struggling to look after patients. Most Palestinians have to live on less than $2 a day, and are routinely unable to access the basic amenities they need. Efforts to call attention to the plight of Palestinians is routinely stifled. At times, the situation feels hopeless.

Let’s change this. On this blessed month, give hope to Palestine.

What is Zakat?

Zakat is a pillar of Islam and its reward, along with all other good acts, is multiplied during the blessed month of Ramadan.

You are eligible to pay Zakat if the amount of wealth that you have earned is more than the Nisaab (the amount of wealth a person must earn in order for the payment of Zakat to become obligatory). In this case, 2.5% must be given to charity in the form of Zakat.

Use our Simple Zakat Calculator to work out your Zakat in minutes.

What is Fidya and how much is Fidya?

Anyone who cannot fast during Ramadan and is unable to make up the lost days afterwards must compensate by feeding a poor person for each day of fasting missed. Fidya for one day is what you consider to be the average cost of two meals. For UK residents, this would be around £5 per person.

What is Kaffarah?

Kaffarah is the payment to be made if someone intentionally breaks or misses a fast without a valid reason. They must either fast continuously for 60 days or, if this is not possible, they must feed 60 poor people with two meals for one day. For UK residents, this would cost £300 per day.

What is Zakat-ul-Fitr or Fitrana?

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) made it compulsory for every Muslim to pay their Zakat ul-Fitr prior to Eid prayer if they have the means to do so. The money is distributed amongst the needy so that they too may enjoy Eid. The cost of this is £5 per person.
