Rawan's story

image

Rawan is a six-year old girl who lives with her parents and sister Rana in Burj El-Barajneh refugee camp in Lebanon. Her home is in poor condition and consists of only two rooms. Although Rawan’s father is currently employed, his $300 per month doesn’t cover the family’s needs.

Rawan was born with a bone malformity. She has had several operations and needs a medical device in her leg to be able to walk. She also needs to wear another device to treat her backbone.

Rawan is in grade one at the UNRWA Tulkarem School and she is a very hardworking student. She loves drawing and reading. It is difficult for Rawan to make friends as she can’t walk, run or play. She would like to be able to run in the school playground and race with her classmates.

Her mother goes to school with her every day and also carries her to hospital. Rawan recently had surgery. Although UNRWA covered the hospital costs, the medical devices were too expensive and Rawan’s parents had to ask friends and relatives to contribute.

Fortunately, we were able to pay for part of Rawan’s medical treatment. Our field office visited Rawan after the surgery and gave her a doll to play with, her smile was a joy to see.

Rawan will always need surgery. When she grows up, she will need to get new devices. She will always need help and we will make sure we are here for her.
